WHO MAY JOIN THE INDIANA ACADEMY OF OPHTHALMOLOGY?

Membership in the Academy is divided into six membership categories:

  • FELLOWS: Indiana licensed physicians (M.D. or D.O.) specializing in ophthalmology.
  • JUNIOR FELLOWS: Indiana licensed physicians (M.D. or D.O.) practicing ophthalmology for less than 2 years.
  • SENIOR FELLOWS: Indiana licensed physicians (M.D. or D.O.) who have reached their 66th birthday and are still practicing ophthalmology.
  • RETIRED MEMBERS: Former fellows of the Academy who are retired.
  • RESIDENT MEMBERS: Physicians (M.D. or D.O.) who are enrolled in approved ophthalmology residency training programs in the State of Indiana.
  • OUT-OF-STATE MEMBERS: Licensed physicians (M.D. or D.O.) specializing in ophthalmology whose primary practice is located in any U.S. state other than Indiana. They shall be actively engaged in the practice of the specialty of ophthalmology in their respective state and must be a member in good standing in the state ophthalmology society where their primary practice is located.

WHO GOVERNS THE INDIANA ACADEMY OF OPHTHALMOLOGY?

The Academy is governed by an elected Board of Directors who are responsible for establishing goals and setting policy. Several committees of the Board serve various program activities. Officers and Board members are elected by the membership at-large during the annual business meeting of the IAO. Committee Chairpersons are appointed by the President of the IAO.

IAO COMMITTEES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • MEETING AND PROGRAM - Prepares the program for meetings and prepares any resolutions to be considered at the annual meeting of members.
  • EYE INJURY REGISTRY - Coordinates with the U.S. Eye Injury Registry to promote the Indiana Eye Injury Registry regarding documentation of eye injuries.
  • EXECUTIVE - Meets monthly to review Academy business.
  • LEGISLATIVE - Works with the lobbyist and legislature on proposed rules and bills before the General Assembly and other state regulatory commissions and committees. Disburses PAC moneys.
  • MEMBERSHIP - Enlists and recruits qualified persons for active membership, maintains a census of ophthalmologists, and supervises a collection of demographic information regarding Indiana ophthalmologists.
  • NOMINATING - Submits a slate of directors and officers for election at each annual meeting of the members.
  • PUBLIC RELATIONS - Recommends policy and programs for public outreach and promotes ophthalmology in the state. Maintains a speakers bureau. Coordinates the Diabetes 2000 and Glaucoma 2001 programs.
  • HEALTH PLAN RELATIONS - Works with all third party payers, including Medicare and Medicaid, to establish appropriate medical policies for services provided by ophthalmologists. Responds to questions from the membership. Addresses problems members are having with third party payers. Responds to questions from membership regarding managed care.
  • TECHNOLOGY - Coordination of the IAO website. Advise the IAO on issues of concern to the members regarding technology. Assist with audio-visual needs during the IAO Annual Meeting.
